Find the Right Tree

The Colorado Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architecture, Colorado Nursery & Greenhouse Association, Colorado Tree Coalition and Colorado State University Extension have compiled a Front Range Tree Recommendation List to help choose the right tree for specific areas.

To determine your Plant Hardiness Zone, visit the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map.

Once you have determine your Zone, visit the Front Range Tree Recommendation List and the Feature Tree Archive, below, for lists of recommended trees for Colorado.

This list is intended to assist those involved in the buying, growing, selling, selection, siting and specification of trees, with the ultimate goal of a healthy, diverse and geographically appropriate landscape and urban forest. The ratings apply to the Colorado Front Range, generally defined as the region from Colorado Springs to the Wyoming border and from the foothills to the eastern plains.

If you are located outside of the Front Range some of these species may or may not work depending on the temperature extremes your location experiences.

The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) has been discovered in Boulder, Colorado. All Ash tree species (Fraxinus) are no longer recommended to be planted in Colorado. To learn more about this insect visit our EAB Informational Page. To find alternatives to this tree visit the Front Range Tree Recommendation List, the Feature Tree Archive or our most recent addition, the Colorado Ash Tree Replacement Selection Tool (xlsx file).
