Family:  Betulaceae

Habit: Broad pyramidal, 40-50' in height with a spread of 1/3 to 2/3's the height

Hardiness: Zones 4-7

Leaves: Alternate, simple, ovate to obovate, double serrate, 2 1/2 to 6" long, pubescence on petiole and leaf veins.

Bark: pale brown to gray brown, flaky bark

Flowers: monoecious, 2" to 3" long catkins,blooms early spring

Fruit: Nut, 1/2 to 5/8" in diameter, nut enclosed in involucre, matures in September

Landscape Value:  Under-utilized tree; excellent formal character; street tree; difficult, dry sites

How It Will Do in Colorado:  tree is difficult to find; pH adaptable; extremely tolerant tree, surviving hot summers, cold winters, wind, drought,and heavy or alkaline soils

Insects and Diseases:  No pests or diseases are of major concern.
